Season-long futures bets in ETH: what a long wait does to your bankroll
Every August I place a handful of outright bets: who wins the league, who gets relegated, who finishes top scorer. They are the most fun bets I make all year, because I get to follow them for nine months. Since I moved my betting to ETH, they have also become the most confusing to track.
The first season I did it, I put a stake on a mid-table side to finish in the top four. They did. When the bet settled in May, the payout in ETH was exactly what the odds promised. In dollar terms, though, it was worth noticeably less than I had imagined back in August, because ether had drifted down over the year. A winning bet felt like a draw.
The following season the opposite happened. A losing futures bet hurt less than it should have, since the rest of my ETH bankroll had risen in value while that stake was locked up. My spreadsheet looked great and told me nothing about my betting.
Here is how I handle outrights now.
I decide in advance what currency I am really betting in. If I think of my bankroll in dollars, I place futures at books that accept a stablecoin and settle in it. If I am happy to think in ETH, I use ETH and stop converting results back to dollars in my head.
I keep futures stakes small relative to the bankroll. Money tied up for nine months cannot be used for anything else, and if the book offers no cash-out on outrights, it is truly locked.
I check the settlement rules for long-term markets before betting. What happens if a season is cut short, or a player transfers abroad in January? Some books void, others settle on standings at the time. A few words in the rules make a big difference over a whole season.
I also look at how the sportsbook handles the currency of a bet. At one book, a futures stake placed in ETH paid out in ETH. At another, the balance had been converted to an internal dollar unit at the moment I bet. Neither is wrong, but I want to know which one I am dealing with.
When I picked the books I use for outrights this season, I started with Ethereum sportsbooks compared side by side on a review site, then opened each one's rules page for long-term markets. That combination took an hour and saved me from at least one book that voided outrights in situations I did not like.
The bets themselves are still a gamble on football. I just want the result in May to reflect the football.
